Whether you're a regular gym-goer, a keen runner, a competitive athlete or someone dealing with muscular tension from everyday life, sports massage can be a useful addition to your approach to looking after your body.

At First Touch Osteopathy, we provide individual sports massage treatments tailored to your needs, activity levels and preferences.

From addressing areas of muscular tension to supporting your comfort and mobility, we'll take the time to understand what you're looking for and adapt your treatment accordingly.

What is sports massage?

Sports massage is a form of hands-on soft-tissue treatment that uses a range of massage techniques to address muscle tension and discomfort.

Despite its name, sports massage isn't exclusively for athletes. It can be suitable for people with physically demanding jobs, those who exercise recreationally and anyone looking for targeted treatment of muscular tension.

Treatment is adapted to your needs and may involve working on specific muscle groups or several areas of the body, depending on your symptoms and preferences.

You don't need to be injured or training for a sporting event to book an appointment.

Your sports massage appointment

Every appointment is tailored to you. We'll discuss what you'd like from your session and adapt the treatment to your needs.

1. Understanding your needs

We'll begin by discussing any areas of discomfort, relevant medical history, your activity levels and what you'd like to achieve from your appointment.

2. Your treatment

Your massage may involve a combination of soft-tissue techniques, with pressure and treatment areas adapted to your comfort and preferences.

We'll explain what we're doing, and you can ask us to adjust the pressure or stop at any time.

3. Advice and next steps

Depending on your needs, we may discuss movement, exercise or practical strategies for managing muscular tension.

If your symptoms suggest that a more detailed clinical assessment would be appropriate, we'll discuss your options.

Sports massage or injury rehabilitation?

Sports massage or injury rehabilitation?

Sports massage and injury rehabilitation serve different purposes, although they can sometimes complement each other.

Sports massage focuses primarily on hands-on soft-tissue treatment and may be suitable if you're looking for help with muscular tension or temporary soreness.

If you're experiencing a new injury, persistent pain, joint instability or symptoms that repeatedly interrupt your training, a more detailed injury assessment may be the better starting point.

Our Sports Injury & Rehabilitation service focuses on assessing injuries and developing appropriate treatment and progressive exercise programmes to support your return to activity.

Sports Massage FAQs

Please reach us at hello@firsttouchosteo.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Not at all. Sports massage can be suitable for people of different activity levels, including those who don't participate in sport.

Sports massage can involve firm pressure, but it shouldn't be unnecessarily painful. We'll adapt the treatment to your preferences, and you can ask us to change the pressure at any time.

Depending on your needs, massage may be appropriate around your training schedule. However, intensive treatment immediately before competition may not be suitable for everyone. We can discuss the timing of your appointment.

Sports massage may provide temporary relief from muscular soreness or tension, but there is insufficient evidence that massage alone prevents sports injuries. Appropriate training, recovery and strength work remain important.

If you have a new injury, significant pain, swelling or unexplained symptoms, an injury assessment is usually a more appropriate starting point. Contact us if you're unsure which appointment to book.
