Helping you understand your problem, move more comfortably and get back to the things that matter to you.
At First Touch Osteopathy, we provide individual osteopathic assessment and treatment from our clinic in central Plymouth.
Whether you're experiencing a recent injury, persistent aches and pains or a problem that keeps returning, we'll take the time to understand your symptoms, how they're affecting you and what you'd like to achieve.

Osteopathy is a regulated healthcare profession focused on the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and management of musculoskeletal problems.
Osteopaths consider how different areas of the body move and work together rather than looking only at the place where symptoms are being felt.
Your treatment may include hands-on techniques alongside movement, exercise, rehabilitation and practical advice. The approach we use will depend on you, your assessment and what we think is most appropriate.
Most importantly, we'll explain what we've found and involve you in decisions about your care.
People visit us with many different musculoskeletal problems. Some have started recently, while others have been present or recurring for much longer.
Problems we commonly assess include:
If you're unsure whether osteopathy is appropriate for your problem, you're welcome to contact us before booking.

We begin by listening.
We'll ask about your symptoms, general health, previous injuries, work, activity and anything else that may be relevant.
Understanding what you want to get back to doing is just as important.
Your osteopath will carry out an appropriate physical assessment to help understand what may be contributing to the problem.
We'll explain what we find in straightforward language and discuss the options with you.
Where appropriate, treatment may combine hands-on techniques with movement, exercise, rehabilitation and advice.
The aim isn't simply to treat you in the clinic, but to help you understand what you can do between appointments too.
There isn't one standard osteopathic treatment that everybody receives.
Depending on your assessment and preferences, treatment may include a combination of techniques aimed at muscles, joints and other soft tissues, alongside movement and exercise.
Your osteopath will explain what they propose and why. You can ask questions at any point, and treatment will only proceed with your consent.
Where exercise or rehabilitation is appropriate, we'll aim to make it realistic for your lifestyle rather than simply handing you a long list of exercises.
Assessment and osteopathic care for new, persistent or recurring back and neck problems.
Assessment, treatment and progressive rehabilitation to help you return to activity and sport.
Assessment of musculoskeletal factors that may contribute to certain headaches, neck-related symptoms and jaw problems.
Osteopathic care focusing on the changing physical demands placed on the body during pregnancy and after birth.
Age-appropriate osteopathic assessment and care for younger patients.
A gentle approach using subtle osteopathic techniques as part of individualised care.
Your first appointment is longer than a standard follow-up so that we have time to understand the problem properly.
We'll discuss your symptoms, medical history, lifestyle and what you'd like help with before carrying out an appropriate physical assessment.
We'll then explain what we think may be happening and discuss your options.
Where appropriate, treatment can usually begin during your first appointment.
If we think another healthcare professional or further investigation would be more appropriate, we'll discuss this with you.

No. You can book an appointment with an osteopath directly.
No. People visit osteopaths for different reasons, including assessment of movement or recurring musculoskeletal problems and help returning to activity following injury.
Some techniques can occasionally feel uncomfortable, particularly around an already sensitive area, but treatment should always be discussed with you and adapted where necessary.
Tell your osteopath if anything feels uncomfortable or if you'd prefer a different approach.
There isn't a standard treatment course.
The number and frequency of appointments depends on factors such as the nature of the problem, how long it has been present, your general health, your goals and how things progress.
We'll discuss this with you rather than automatically prescribing a fixed number of sessions.
Part of our role is recognising when osteopathic treatment isn't the appropriate next step.
If your assessment suggests that you would be better served by another healthcare professional or further investigation, we'll explain this and discuss the appropriate next steps.
If you're experiencing pain, recovering from an injury or dealing with a problem that keeps returning, book an appointment and we'll start by understanding what's happening and what you'd like to achieve.
