Individual osteopathic care during pregnancy and after birth.

Pregnancy and the postnatal period bring significant changes to your body. As your body adapts, you may experience new aches and pains, changes in movement or discomfort during everyday activities.

At First Touch Osteopathy, we offer individual musculoskeletal assessment and osteopathic care tailored to your stage of pregnancy or postnatal recovery.

We'll take the time to understand your symptoms, discuss your goals and explain the treatment and self-management options that may be appropriate for you.

Osteopathy During Pregnancy

Pregnancy can change the physical demands placed on your muscles and joints as your body adapts to a growing baby.

Some people experience back pain, pelvic discomfort or other musculoskeletal symptoms that affect walking, sleeping, working and everyday movement.

Our osteopaths can assess your symptoms, consider your pregnancy and medical history, and discuss whether osteopathic treatment is appropriate.

Where suitable, care may include adapted hands-on techniques, movement advice and exercises. We'll also discuss when assessment by your midwife, GP or another healthcare professional would be more appropriate.

Every pregnancy is different. We assess a range of musculosk

Your appointment, adapted to you

We'll tailor your assessment and any treatment to your symptoms, stage of pregnancy, medical history and preferences.

1. Consultation and assessment

We'll discuss your symptoms, pregnancy and medical history, everyday activities and what you'd like help with.

Your osteopath will carry out an appropriate musculoskeletal assessment, adapting the examination to your comfort.

2. Individual treatment

If osteopathic treatment is appropriate, we'll explain the available options and adapt any hands-on techniques and treatment positions to your needs.

Your comfort and informed consent are important throughout your appointment.

3. Movement and practical advice

Depending on your assessment, we may discuss suitable exercises, movement strategies and adjustments to everyday activities.

Where appropriate, we'll also recommend working with your midwife, GP or a specialist pelvic health physiotherapist.

Experiencing pelvic girdle pain?

Pregnancy-related pelvic girdle pain can affect the joints and surrounding structures of the pelvis. Symptoms may be felt around the lower back, hips, buttocks or pubic area.

Everyday activities such as walking, climbing stairs, standing on one leg or turning over in bed can become uncomfortable.

We'll discuss your symptoms and carry out an appropriate assessment to help identify whether your discomfort may be musculoskeletal.

Depending on your findings, we may offer adapted osteopathic treatment, exercise and practical advice or recommend assessment by a specialist pelvic health physiotherapist or your maternity team.

You don't have to wait until discomfort becomes severe to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare professional.

When medical assessment is more appropriate

Osteopathic care is not a substitute for routine maternity care or medical assessment.

If you're pregnant and experience vaginal bleeding, severe or persistent abdominal pain, severe headache, visual disturbances or a change in your baby's usual movements, contact your maternity unit promptly rather than booking a routine osteopathy appointment.

After birth, symptoms such as heavy bleeding, fever, severe headache, chest pain or breathlessness require urgent medical assessment.

If you experience a medical emergency, call 999.

If you're unsure whether osteopathic care is suitable, please contact us or speak with your midwife or GP before booking.

Osteopathy After Birth

The weeks and months after birth can bring new physical demands as you recover, care for your baby and gradually return to everyday activities.

You may experience back or neck discomfort, muscular tension or changes in how comfortable you feel moving and exercising.

At First Touch Osteopathy, we offer individual musculoskeletal assessment during the postnatal period, taking account of your birth experience, recovery and current symptoms.

Where appropriate, care may include hands-on treatment, movement advice and progressive exercise.

If your symptoms involve pelvic floor dysfunction, bladder or bowel problems, significant pelvic pain or concerns about healing following birth, we'll recommend assessment by your GP, midwife or a specialist pelvic health physiotherapist.

Getting back to movement and exercise

Returning to exercise after pregnancy is a personal process, and there's no single timetable that suits everybody.

Your recovery, symptoms, birth experience, previous activity levels and personal goals can all influence how and when you return to exercise.

If you're experiencing musculoskeletal discomfort, we can assess your symptoms and discuss suitable movement and strengthening exercises.

Where more specialist postnatal rehabilitation is needed, particularly for pelvic floor symptoms, we'll recommend an appropriate healthcare professional.

Our aim is to help you make informed decisions about returning to the activities you enjoy.

Please reach us at hello@firsttouchosteo.co.uk if you cannot find an answer to your question.

Osteopathic assessment may be appropriate for some musculoskeletal symptoms during pregnancy. We'll consider your pregnancy, medical history and current symptoms before discussing whether treatment is suitable.

No. We will adapt your examination and treatment positions to your stage of pregnancy and comfort. Your osteopath will explain the options and discuss your preferences.

We can assess musculoskeletal symptoms that may be associated with pelvic girdle pain and discuss appropriate management. Treatment options depend on your individual assessment, and we may recommend specialist pelvic health physiotherapy or advice from your maternity team.

This depends on your recovery, symptoms and any complications. If you've recently given birth, particularly following a complicated delivery or caesarean birth, please contact us or speak with your maternity team before booking.

Please contact us before your appointment so we can confirm the arrangements and make your visit as comfortable as possible.
